Funny How THings Work Out (album)
October 2025
Funny How Things Work Out is OkCello’s most expansive statement yet—a bold convergence of rhythm, reflection, and release. Built entirely from the cello and shaped by hip-hop pulse, ska-inflected movement, and improvisational freedom, the album carries a sense of joyful inevitability: the feeling that life’s twists, tensions, and surprises are somehow conspiring toward clarity. Rather than resisting change, Funny How Things Work Out leans into it, transforming uncertainty into motion and struggle into groove. It’s music that nods, bounces, and breathes—inviting listeners to trust the journey, loosen their grip, and recognize meaning in the unfolding.
Lil’ Okorie and the Magic Cello (Book)
Story by Kyri Demby. Illustrations by Randy E. Gray II.
Lil’ Okorie lives in a noisy city where sirens blare, people rush, and feelings often get lost in the chaos. But Okorie doesn’t mind—because he has music. And not just any music… his cello is magic.
When Okorie plays, clouds disappear, hearts feel lighter, and even the grumpiest people crack a smile. From playgrounds to hospitals to neighborhood corners, his music carries hope where it’s needed most. Along the way, Okorie learns that what makes him different is exactly what makes him powerful.
Lil’ Okorie and the Magic Cello is a beautifully illustrated children’s picture book about confidence, kindness, emotional expression, and the power of using your gifts to help others. Perfect for classrooms, music programs, and bedtime reading, this story encourages children to embrace who they are—and use their talents to make the world a better place.
“Music Is Magic” is an original song written by Kyri Demby and produced by Lavon Bibb, built around a loop from OkCello’s track Fire. It was created to accompany the book Lil’ Okorie and the Magic Cello.
The song captures Lil Okorie’s moment of realization and self-acceptance: that music is magic—something joyful, powerful, and beautiful.
Beginning with OkCello’s syncopated jazz riff, the track gradually layers shakers, drums, synths, and ultimately vocals, unfolding into an upbeat, heartening, infectious, and singable anthem that celebrates the transformative magic of music.

A Change is Gonna Come,
Recorded and performed by OkCello for WellStar Health
Last year, I was asked by Wellstar Health to perform and record music at the Center for Civil and Human Rights for their MLK video program, featuring Dr. Bernice King, the daughter of Dr. Reverend King, interviewed by Monica Pearson. I did two pieces: a solo cello performance of Lift Every Voice and Sing (I’ll post that on first day of Feb) and A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke. Here is the whole video. It is a moving and insightful piece on Dr King, but also the impactful role that Coretta Scott King played in building and shaping the King legacy we have come to know and revere.
Funny…
